Tesla Starts Optimus Output, External Sales in Late 2027

Tesla has begun building production-quality Optimus humanoid robots at its Fremont factory, the company confirmed in its third-quarter 2026 shareholder update. The bots coming off the line are the first units Tesla describes as production quality, and the company says the current manufacturing process is suitable for a commercial product.

The milestone is narrower than the headline. On the 21 October earnings call, chief executive Elon Musk called the phase early production and said the ramp would be uneven because the design is still changing. Most of the equipment for a line designed to build one million robots a year has arrived at Fremont, but Musk estimated at least a year, possibly longer, to reach 20,000 units a week, roughly 1.04 million a year.

External deliveries are targeted for around the end of 2027, and only after three conditions are met: the artificial intelligence has to handle open-ended tasks, the electromechanical design has to be durable, and operating life has to be long enough that a robot does not wear out in a month. Musk also said Tesla plans to build a fleet of 10,000 to 20,000 robots for an internal training programme called Optimus Academy, and hopes to move the AI5 chip into Optimus around April 2027.

Hands remain the hardest sub-assembly. A September report described major manufacturing and durability challenges in hand assembly, supplier limits and breakdowns of automated equipment at Fremont. That detail is the most useful signal for component suppliers, because it points to where volume will be gated: tendon and gear assemblies, high-resolution position feedback, force sensing and the connectors and harnesses that survive millions of cycles.

Buyers tracking the humanoid ramp should map their catalogue against joint-level requirements rather than robot-level promises. A single humanoid design can consume dozens of magnetic encoders, current-sense amplifiers, motor drivers and inertial sensors, plus hundreds of board-to-board and wire-to-board connectors. Qualification cycles for these parts run six to twelve months, so sourcing decisions made now determine whether a supplier can participate in 2027 volumes.

YouHuYou stocks the motion and sensing silicon behind these designs, including the AS5047P 14-bit magnetic encoder, the TMC2240 smart stepper driver and the VL53L5CX 8x8 multizone ToF sensor. Samples and ladder pricing are listed in our catalogue.
