Tesla Cuts 2026 Capex to $20B From $25B: Supplier Read

By YouHuYou Components · 2026-10-24 · Tangxia, Dongguan, China

Tesla reported third quarter 2026 results on 21 October and the number suppliers should circle is not revenue. It is capital expenditure guidance, cut to about USD 20 billion for the full year from USD 25 billion previously. Quarter capex came in at USD 4.73 billion, up 110 percent year on year but well below the USD 7.95 billion consensus, and free cash flow was USD 1.53 billion, down 62 percent. The shares closed 22 October at USD 374.74, down about 3 percent.

The rest of the release explains why the guide moved. Revenue was USD 28.05 billion, flat year on year. Deliveries were 486,532 units, down 2.1 percent, against a record comparison quarter when US buyers rushed to beat an expiring tax credit. Automotive revenue fell 3 percent to USD 20.56 billion. Regulatory credit sales collapsed from USD 417 million to USD 113 million, and because that revenue carries almost no cost, its disappearance hits profit directly. GAAP net income fell 43 percent to USD 787 million, operating income fell 56 percent to USD 718 million and the operating margin halved to 2.6 percent from 5.8 percent.

Two segments behaved differently. Automotive gross margin excluding credits recovered to 18.1 percent from 16.3 percent in the second quarter, which management credited to a richer Asia Pacific delivery mix. Energy storage installed 13.7 gigawatt hours, up 10 percent, but revenue fell 16 percent to USD 2.88 billion after tariff related customer refunds.

The cost line is where the future is being funded. Research and development rose 69 percent to USD 2.76 billion, with management attributing most of the increase to superintelligence programmes, and total operating expenses rose 39 percent to USD 4.78 billion. That is why a company with positive free cash flow still cut its capex plan.

For component suppliers the signal is a shift in timing rather than a cancellation. Optimus and Cybercab tooling and the AI training build continue to absorb cash, while vehicle programme spending is being stretched. Suppliers with automotive qualified parts should expect slower release schedules on model year changes and firmer pressure on piece price, while robotics and energy storage lines keep pulling. Buyers on the other side of the table, sourcing for industrial and consumer programmes that share automotive grade components, should treat any Tesla driven capacity expansion in power semiconductors and actuators as a lead time risk, not a price opportunity. Our component catalog and quote desk desk tracks allocation on those families and our PCBA assembly service line can qualify alternates before a programme slips.
