Tesla Optimus Early Production Starts at Fremont Plant

Tesla's third-quarter report confirmed that early production of the Optimus humanoid robot has started on a high-volume line at the Fremont factory, with the first units meeting mass-production quality standards. The company cautioned that external customer deliveries are not expected until around the end of 2027, and that reaching an annualized rate of one million units remains at least a year away.
The timing reset hit the stock, which fell more than 3% after hours, but the supply chain detail is what matters to component buyers. CEO Elon Musk identified the dexterous hand as the main manufacturing bottleneck, saying robots are being built with hand designs that are not yet finalized. Actuators, miniature motors, tactile sensors and encoders therefore stay in flux, complicating quoting for suppliers targeting the program.

Tesla also scheduled the integration of its AI5 chip into Optimus around April 2027, a generational jump the company says delivers an order of magnitude more compute than AI4. That timeline gives a concrete date for robot-controller MCU and power management demand tied to the platform.
Q3 numbers frame the context: revenue of $28.0 billion was flat year over year, GAAP net income fell 43% to $787 million, and quarterly vehicle deliveries slipped 2% to 486,500. With automotive margins under pressure, hardware teams should treat the robot program as a 2027-2028 opportunity rather than near-term volume.

Suppliers positioned for humanoid programs elsewhere in Asia will read this as confirmation that Tesla's in-house ramp is slower than the 2026 targets once promised, leaving room for competitors to lock in tier-one positions while specifications remain open.
