Meta Lifts 2026 Capex Floor to $135B, Cash Flow Negative

Meta reported third quarter 2026 revenue of USD 64.60 billion on 22 October, up 26 percent and ahead of the USD 63.4 billion consensus, with advertising contributing USD 63.06 billion, or 97.6 percent of the total. Ad impressions rose 10 percent and the average price per ad rose 14 percent, a combination of volume and pricing growth that rarely appears together. Fourth quarter guidance of USD 73 billion to USD 76 billion also came in above expectations.

Then the costs. Operating income fell 37 percent to USD 12.99 billion on a reported basis, or rose 11 percent to USD 22.88 billion adjusted for non recurring items. Free cash flow turned negative at minus USD 2.12 billion, the first negative quarter since listing. Full year capital expenditure guidance was lifted to USD 135 billion to USD 145 billion, with the floor raised from USD 130 billion, the third upward revision this year. The shares fell 6.98 percent to USD 648.85, cutting the market capitalisation to USD 1.65 trillion.

Analysts covering the name attribute the pattern of raising the floor while holding the ceiling to cost inflation rather than to expanded ambition, and the specific cost cited is memory. That is consistent with everything distributors have reported since mid year: DRAM and NAND contract prices have climbed every quarter, and a hyperscaler that budgets a fixed number of racks finds the same racks cost more. When a capex ceiling stays put and the floor rises, the increment is being absorbed by component prices.

The product story is Muse, the personal agent launched in September. Management said it passed 10 million users in the United States and Canada within about 40 days, that roughly a quarter of them use it daily, and that it is compute hungry enough to explain a staged geographic rollout. Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said the company expects cost efficiency to improve more than tenfold next year, which is another way of saying today's inference cost is the constraint.

Legal risk arrived the same week. A New Mexico judge ordered Meta to pay USD 25 billion on 21 October after a jury found the company misled residents about data handling, a sum roughly equal to a quarter of profit, and Meta said it will appeal. Rhode Island then sued on 23 October over scam advertising, alleging about 15 billion high risk ads shown daily and that roughly 10 percent of 2024 revenue came from prohibited marketing.

For component buyers the takeaway is that hyperscaler demand is now price inelastic on memory and power, and elastic on everything else. Expect multi year contracts on memory, substrates and power devices, and shorter commitments elsewhere. Our component catalog and quote desk desk can confirm current allocation by family, and our PCBA assembly service line can re-quote builds where a memory driven cost increase forces a redesign.
