The memory shortage has entered a new phase. Analysis cited by Korean media in early October put combined inventories at Samsung Electronics and SK hynix below 10 days of supply, an unusually thin cushion for an industry that normally carries weeks of buffer stock. TrendForce data shows DRAM delivery lead times around 20 weeks and NAND around 16 weeks as of mid-October. DDR5 lead times have stretched from roughly six weeks earlier in the year to as much as 50 weeks in some channels.

Prices reflect the squeeze. Contract forecasts put Q4 DRAM up about 10-20% quarter over quarter and NAND up 15-20%, with enterprise SSDs rising 23-28%. Server DDR5 32GB RDIMMs moved to around $900 in late October, up more than 20% in a month. HBM4 consumes roughly three times the wafer capacity of standard DRAM per bit, so every allocation decision at the fabs removes ordinary DDR4 and DDR5 supply from the market.

The market has split into two tiers. Hyperscale and AI buyers hold priority quotas, with Samsung and SK hynix having locked roughly 75-80% of 2027 output in long-term agreements. Industrial, automotive and consumer buyers compete for the remainder through authorized distribution and vetted independent channels.

For buyers outside the AI tier, three moves matter now. First, confirm 2027 volumes this month and place blanket POs for first-half memory before the next round of increases; Samsung reports Q3 results on 29 October and capacity commentary is unlikely to improve. Second, review every memory line for qualified alternates, including lower-density and wide-temperature variants. Third, for designs not yet frozen, consider NOR flash or eMMC alternatives where performance allows. Our parts catalog lists flash and DRAM options with live stock, and we can quote against long-term agreements for Q1-Q2 2027 delivery.
