Bitcoin Slips Below $82K as Spot ETF Outflows Hit $635M

Bitcoin traded below USD 82,000 on 23 October, at USD 81,449 by one measure, down about 1 percent on the day after an intraday slide to USD 80,989. The move followed a rejection near USD 84,778 and a failure to hold above USD 85,000 earlier in the week, and it left the USD 80,000 area as the level the market is defending. Daily volume was around USD 29.85 billion and market capitalisation near USD 1.64 trillion.

The flow data explains more than the price chart. United States spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded USD 635.49 million of net outflows on 22 October, the largest single day since 25 June, ending three consecutive sessions that had pulled in about USD 1.08 billion. October's cumulative net flow is now negative by roughly USD 174.5 million, and total spot ETF assets under management slipped to USD 108.13 billion from USD 110.95 billion a month earlier. Leverage unwound with it: exchanges liquidated about USD 406 million of positions across roughly 89,600 accounts in 24 hours, and open interest fell even as derivatives volume rose 19 percent, which is the signature of positions being closed rather than new ones opened.

Macro is doing the work. Brent crude has held above USD 100 and at times near USD 114 on Gulf disruption and attacks on Russian refining capacity, which feeds through to inflation and to the liquidity available for speculative assets. The Federal Reserve raised rates to 3.75 to 4.00 percent in September, prediction markets put roughly 94 percent odds on no change at the 28 October meeting, and more than 70 percent odds of another increase in December. Risk assets sold off together: the Nasdaq 100 fell 2.6 percent on 22 October, Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped more than 3 percent and Korea's Kospi 3.5 percent.

There is a slower structural thread too. The Quantum Alliance, a group of nine crypto companies, estimates that about 6.4 million bitcoin, roughly 30 percent of circulating supply, sit at addresses with publicly exposed keys, and developers are working on quantum resistant address proposals that remain drafts. Binance founder Changpeng Zhao argued on 23 October that AI driven scams, not cryptographic attacks, are the immediate threat to holders.

For hardware buyers the relevance is mining economics, which set a real and quantifiable demand curve. Miners are among the largest single purchasers of high wattage power supplies, thermal modules and power distribution hardware, and at USD 81,000 with energy costs elevated, marginal fleets switch off and replacement capex pauses. The offset is conversion: sites with secured power are increasingly re-purposed for AI hosting, which keeps demand for electrical and cooling equipment intact even as ASIC orders soften. Suppliers exposed to both should watch the hashprice to power cost ratio monthly, not the spot price daily. Our component catalog and quote desk catalog covers the power and thermal components used on both sides of that pivot.
