AI Rack Power: GaN and SiC Makers Hike Prices on 800 VDC Push
October turned into a repricing month for power semiconductors. onsemi announced price increases effective October 10, Allegro on October 1, and Taiwan discrete makers including Panjit and Sinopower confirmed hikes of 10 to 15 percent across MOSFET and protection lines. The common denominator is AI data center power, where analysts have lifted the addressable market from roughly 12 billion dollars toward 50 billion as rack densities climb.
The demand side has a roadmap now. At the OCP Global Summit NVIDIA detailed its next rack generations: 570 kW per rack for Gen 3, and a native 800 VDC architecture for Gen 4 in 2028. Delta noted that once IT rack power exceeds 250 kW, 800 V distribution reduces both conversion losses and copper usage. The immediate consequence for component buyers is a spec upgrade across the whole power train: higher-voltage MOSFETs, SiC devices, hot-swap and eFuse protection, gate drivers and digital isolators.
Product announcements through October map the shift. Microchip and Navitas published an 800 V-to-6 V DC/DC GaN reference design built around the OCP 800 VDC architecture. Infineon released a 27 kW three-phase PSU platform supporting 800 VDC and plus-or-minus 400 VDC rails. Toshiba launched a 3.3 kV, 800 A SiC MOSFET module for grid-side conversion, and Renesas entered 100 V enhancement-mode GaN for intermediate bus and robotics loads.
Supply is not keeping pace with the hype. Automotive-grade SiC capacity is being shared with data center programs, and several vendors report AI-related orders now outrank automotive in their 2026 growth plans. That tightens lead times for the same 650 V to 1,200 V devices that industrial and solar customers use, echoing the allocation patterns seen in analog and MCU lines this quarter.
For BOM owners this is a good moment to re-check second sources on power stages before the next price letter arrives. We stock and source GaN, SiC and silicon MOSFET lines from multiple franchises — see the parts catalog or send your BOM through the contact page for cross-references and current lead times.
