Rodent Awareness Week 2026: Mountain Towns Lead the Call Data
Rodent Awareness Week runs from 18 to 24 October 2026, supported by the National Pest Management Association. The timing is not arbitrary: it marks the point in the northern hemisphere autumn when outdoor food sources thin out and rodents start looking for a way inside. For anyone selling deterrent or exclusion hardware, it also marks the start of the retail window that decides the season.
What the call data shows
Terminix Service, the largest pest control company in the Carolinas, released its 2026 ranking to mark the week, using its own service call data across South Carolina, western North Carolina and the Central Savannah River area of Georgia. The method is worth stating because it explains the shape of the list: calls per 100,000 residents, duplicate customer calls removed, cities of 100,000 or more only, normalised against 2023 Census estimates.
The top of the table is mountain country. Hendersonville, North Carolina leads at 100 rodent calls per 100,000 residents, ahead of Asheville at 88.4. Sumter, South Carolina follows at 86.4, then Charleston at 86.2 — which nevertheless logged 366 calls in 2026, the highest absolute volume in the service area. Florence (56.1), Beaufort and Bluffton (48.2), Shelby and Cleveland County (40.5), Summerville (37.1), Augusta metro (32.2) and Rock Hill with York and Lancaster counties (28.3) complete the ten.
‘Every fall, our teams see the same pattern. Temperatures drop, and rats and mice start looking for a way inside,’ said Kevin Hathorne, technical director at Terminix Service. ‘In the mountains around Hendersonville and Asheville, that shift happens fast. Along the coast in Charleston and Beaufort, the pressure never really lets up.’
Why mountain towns lead
Three factors explain the pattern, and all three matter to product design. Elevation and sharp seasonal temperature swings shorten the outdoor season abruptly, so the migration indoors is compressed into a few weeks. Older housing stock offers more entry points — the company notes a mouse can pass through an opening the size of a dime. And low-density, tree-heavy neighbourhoods put rodents close to structures without the urban sanitation pressure that changes behaviour in dense cities.
Coastal markets behave differently. Charleston and Beaufort show year-round pressure rather than a spike, which means the product mix there is less about seasonal promotion and more about continuous replacement and professional channel sales.
What it means for the season
- Demand peaks before the complaints do. Retail reorders land in September and October, and hardware that arrives in November misses the first wave. Distributors reading call data in late October are already late for this year and early for the next.
- Match the device to the structure. Attics, crawl spaces and garages need higher-output units with a wider coverage claim; bedrooms and kitchens need quiet night-light formats. A single SKU cannot cover both, and buyers who try end up with returns.
- Exclusion sells with deterrents. The same guidance pest controllers give — seal gaps around pipes and vents, store birdseed and pet food in sealed containers, keep firewood 20 feet from the house — creates a natural bundle for a device brand. Packaging that explains both is more credible than a coverage number.
- Regionalise the marketing copy. A message written for mountain housing stock tests badly in coastal markets and vice versa. The same hardware, two different first paragraphs.
- Quality complaints cluster in the first cold snap. Units that fail do so in the weeks when they run continuously. Ageing tests before shipment are cheaper than a returns season.
The sourcing calendar
For buyers planning the next cycle, the useful date is not October 2026 but June 2027: stock has to be on the water well before the following autumn, and production slots in the pre-season weeks fill first. Container pricing, plug standards and packaging language all need to be settled before that booking, not after.
We build ultrasonic repellers for rodent, bird and insect applications, with stock models for private label and ODM development for brands that need their own housing and feature set. Start from the rodent repeller range, or send target quantity and market to the inquiry form and we will map a production and shipping calendar against your selling season. Buyers who need the electronics sourced separately will find boards, modules and passives in our component catalogue and PCBA service.
